    About

Enjoy an after hours visit to the Castle Keep where your guide will lead you around the atmospheric Keep, with a range of activities to take part in along the way. Will you dare to brave a visit to the castle dungeon? Can you triumph against renowned knight Sir Aymer de Atholl in combat? Test your aim as an archer with an archery challenge!

After your challenges, take a break in the Tavern, where our brave participants will receive a drink and snack. The tour will then head up to the roof to take in the amazing views of Newcastle, where, in full sight of the city, the children will be knighted and receive a certificate of knighthood.

    Useful Information

    • Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times during the tour.
    • We recommend this activity for children ages 7+, though younger children are also welcome!
    • This is an activity trail of a Grade 1 listed historical monument, so please wear suitable footwear.
    • Unfortunately the Castle Keep is not a fully accessible building, so you will need to be able to manage a significant number of stairs during the event.
    • The Castle Keep will be cold in the evening, so don't forget your coat!
    • The castle does not have any toilet accessibility, so the nearest one is in the Bridge Hotel.
    • Meeting Point: Outside Castle Keep, opposite The Bridge Hotel.

    Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle is a must-visit attraction in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne which not only explores the rich history of the city but also offers incredible views from its rooftop. There is much to discover about Newcastle Castle, from which the city gained its name many centuries ago.

The Newcastle Black Gate and Castle Keep have been subject to a vast amount of research over the last couple of years which has revealed a colourful and grim history. The uncovered stories include prisoners being hung drawn and quartered to an unusual tale of a youngster being killed by a flying donkey.

The Keep currently stands as one of the UK's finest medieval stone castle dungeons which is still open to the public. Visitors to the iconic castle will enjoy picturesque views, alongside in-depth history displays covering the backgrounds of castle inhabitants over the ages, and offering an insight into Newcastle's ancient heritage.

From a royal fortress to grim dungeons, new exhibits allow visitors to experience what life would have been like for inhabitants in these two astonishingly preserved medieval buildings. The Newcastle Castle has also hosted several ghost-hunting exhibitions due to its grim history and apparent sightings of The Poppy Girl, a previous resident of the castle who was jailed for owing people money and was beaten and died in the castle prison.

In all cases we advise you check with owners or managers that your particular requirements can be met before making a reservation. We are unable to inspect all aspects of establishments included on our listings. In many cases the information is self-assessed and at times changes are made without our knowledge.
