Begin your journey at Arbeia, once a bustling Roman supply base for Hadrian’s Wall. Explore this reconstructed fort and imagine life on the frontier where soldiers, civilians, and traders – including Middle-Eastern merchants, slaves, and native Britons – coexisted. Wander through reconstructions of Roman structures, such as the impressive gatehouse, barracks, and commanding officers’ house, and learn about the lives of those who lived here over 1,600 years ago.

Next, head to Jarrow Hall, where you’ll discover the Anglo-Saxon world. The museum dedicated to Bede, the greatest scholar of the Dark Ages, tells the story of the Germanic Anglo-Saxons and their remarkable contributions to history. Bede, a monk, teacher, scientist, and historian, defied the common perceptions of his time as violent and uneducated, and his work still influences us today.
